Boric acid is used for:

• obtaining heat-resistant glass, enamels, cements, fluxes;
• the manufacture of detergents and cosmetics, flame retardants, as a disinfectant and preservative;
• corrosion inhibition, as a reagent in photography;
• insect control as a low toxic insecticide;
• antiseptic treatment;
• skin dressing;

Details:

For high temperature brazing, boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) and borax (Na 2 B 2 O 7 ) are used. In addition to this these substances during soldering secrete boric anhydride (В 2 О 3). So combining with the main metal oxides, forms fusible slag, which floats to the surface of the weld and protects it from secondary oxidation. Hence, when soldering copper with boric acid, the process can proceed according to the following reaction: CuO + 2H 3 BO 3 = CuO x B 2 O 3 + ZH 2 O. Moreover when using borax as flux, brazing occurs according to the reaction CuO + Na 2 B 2 O 7 = CuO x B 2 O 3 + Na 2 B 2 O 4 .

So the resulting mixture of fusible salts (СuО x В 2 О 3 and Na 2B 2 O 4 ) melts at a temperature lower than each of them individually. Similarly, soldering occurs when using borax and boric acid and other metals, the oxides of which are bases. The most famous borates are: CuO x B 2 O 3 ; ZnO x B 2 O 3 ; 2Fe 2 O 3 x 3V 2 O 3 etc. Thus boric acid, borax, their mixtures, sometimes boric anhydride are used in the soldering of mainly iron and low-carbon steel with copper, copper-zinc and silver solders. However also as copper, bronze, tompak, brass with a high melting point – copper-zinc and silver solders at temperatures of 800-1150 ° C
